Step
1 - Software Installation and Setup
This section is designed to assist with software installation, setup
and development. There are nine steps involved in an Omnidex installation,
all of which are discussed in this section, with links to other areas
with more detailed information.
This first step involves the software installation and setup procedures
for the Omnidex server software, client software, and Omnidex Network
Services.
Server Setup Guides
A Server Setup Guide is provided for each supported platform.
The Server Setup Guides are designed to walk you through the process
of installing and licensing the Omnidex server software. This process
varies by operating system. These guides are usually shipped in printed
form with the installation media but are provided here for completeness.
Client Setup
Any supported server platform can also be used as a client machine in
a client/server environment, although some platforms, like Windows, offer
more functionality like some Windows specific utilities. Omnidex
Client for Windows is a separate module that is installed separately.
Environment Variables
To function properly, Omnidex requires several environment
variables to be set prior to operation. The Windows setup executable
will attempt to set the required environment variables appropriately.
However, it is a good idea to verify them before continuing.
Network Services
Omnidex Network Server (ODXNET)
is provided to enable client/server applications using Omnidex. An ODXNET
process runs on the server listening for client requests in a networked
environment.
ODXMAKE
ODXMAKE is a UNIX linkage
and make script that links Omnidex to the proper database binaries. ODXMAKE
is not run on all platforms. The appropriate Server
Setup Guide will provide details on running ODXMAKE, if applicable.
REGMAINT
REGMAINT is a maintenance
utility used to activate and modify the DISC License Registration System.
It should be run after the Omnidex software has been installed on the
server. The appropriate Server Setup Guide will provide details on running
REGMAINT.
SYSINFO
SYSINFO is a stand-alone
utility that is used to display operating system information needed for
DISC's product licensing system. It will generally be run before software
is shipped.
